The Daughters of Mary at St Joseph's Province believe that the welfare of the person implies a response to the needs of all the people within their communities. We are committed to take care of a person's physical, emotional, spiritual, and social wellness We strive to serve through our social welfare ministry. We are committed to show Respect We recognize that each individual is a unique person, they have self dignity and rights . It is our commitment to each person to respect their rights.

Compassion:

By responding to the needs of all people, We wish to demonstrate compassion in a caring dignified manner.

Unity through joy, peace and love:

By showing respect of all persons and being open, honest and direct in all our approaches we aim to promote the message of "To be pure and poor for the kingdom of God".

We manage and respect all our resources - human, material, financial - we see them as gifts from God to help us to fulfill our ministry.

Justice :

We recognize the need to be, dignified, equal, honest and just with the people we serve. The social ministry of the Daughters of Mary is to promote and strengthen the teachings of Jesus. We believe that social work is the responsibility of all the sisters at St Joseph's Province. Through our services we promote the love of Jesus as we serve the people within our community. We provide health services to those individuals who are marginalized and disadvantaged.

Stella Maris Social Centre :

Stella Maris which means 'Star of the Sea, was founded in 1995, and is managed by the Sisters of the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary. Under the leader ship of Sr. Monica and Sr.Stella .It has expanded over a period of eight years. Its service units are in eleven areas in the districts of Kanyakumari, Thirunelveli and Kanjeepuram of Tamilnadu. Stella Maris a social service centre is located at Kanyakumari (Cape Comorin) It provides social, psychological and economic support for its marginalized communities.

Home for the Senior Citizens :

Changing family patterns of Joint family to Nuclear family system has contributed to vulnerable situations to many of the elders in the encircling regions of St.Josephs Province target area. Senior citizens were traumatized by severe psycho-social problems because of ignorance of their young generation in so many ways.

With the view of creating a community care and regaining the lost relationship with their young generation the home for the senior citizens are started. Four different homes have been established so far in different locations catering to the needs of disadvantaged senior people. They are:

Four Senior Citizens homes provide adequate spiritual, social support and are responsible for the welfare of senior citizens. These homes are located in different parts of India and in Germany. These homes in general provide accommodation, food, clothing, Medicare, recreation to all its participants. These facilities are provided through mobilizing community resources and thereby educating the community to sustain the programme in its near future. So far it has been a support to more than four hundred senior citizens.


Bala Bhavan :
   
Bala Bhavan, meaning home for the orphan and destitute children. The opportunity for becoming orphan and destitute is enhanced due to increasing factors which include family separation, sickness, child abuse, child trafficking, loss of parents, unwanted birth and so on. It is even more pathetic to see that children of unwanted birth are thrown away in dust bins and open yards. With the attitude of concern for these ignorant children we the Sisters have started these Bala Bhavan for rendering positive care to these children and making them as future leaders of our society. There are seven such homes benefiting children.

These seven homes provide accommodation, food, clothing, counseling, education, and scripture learning to orphaned and destitute children. These services are absolutely free of charge and are run constantly with community participation. These children come from disadvantaged, marginalized families. More than five hundred and fifty children have benefited from this service.

Rehabilitation Centres

Sisters of St.Josephs Province are dedicated to serve people with chronic disability. A rehabilitation centre is started to help people suffering from the fatal diseases such as leprosy. People accommodated into these rehabilitation homes are provided with accommodation, food, medicine, counseling, alternate self employment trainings and direction to initiate own enterprise. Employment opportunity to trained people is also provided. These services are provided at free of cost. So far many people are benefited out of this service.

There are four rehabilitation centers located at various locations. These centers are specially designed to rehabilitate people suffering from Cancer, Leprosy, HIV and AIDS.

  3. Income generation projects among the socially disadvantaged.
  4. Self employment of rural youth and women.
  5. Community social action groups.
  6. Political awareness and education programs.
  7. Tribal family welfare programs.
  8. Education assistance for tribal children.
  9. Cultivating herbal gardens, kitchen gardens and the restoration of denuded forests
  10. Rehabilitation of people affected by leprosy.
  11. Care and support for orphaned children whose parents had HIV and AIDS.

» Training Centre :

The training cum research center of Stella Maris , has a conference hall, residential facilities, canteen facilities, library and meditation hall. It also shares these facilities with neighboring non government as well as government services. We are now in the process of developing a research wing.
 


» Community Development Training :

To empower women to become independent, Stella Maris conducts numerous education programs in self management.

» On Going Training of Self Help Group Leaders :

In collaboration with Tamilnadu Women's Development Corporation and national banks, we conduct on going training programs for self-help group leaders. We are proud to say that our trained self help group leaders are slowly taking over the responsibilities of their villages.

At present we have a woman holding the position of a Panchayat President and twelve women as council members. What was a dream in 1997 has become a reality today.

» Entrepreneurship And Skill Development Training(EDP) :

In 1996, Women were trained in income generating projects and taught how to save. In 2006, Self Help Groups of women and men were trained as entrepreneurs. They were trained in forty five vocational trades. As our self help group members have proved their credibility, national banks are offering loans to other members to start their own businesses. To date we have:
  • 1119 women self-help group projects
  • 85 men self-help group projects.

» Health Projects :

Stella Maris provides a network between its health education programs and government departments. It strives to improve the health of as many families as possible. Within a span of four years, 18,461 people have become both learners and instructors.


» Social Action :

Self help groups have become well organized governing bodies such as PLF (Panchayat level Federation) and DLF (District level Federation).

These collective bodies have pressured governments into:

  • Building roads in villages.
  • Settling family disputes.
  • Providing drinking water.
  • Adequate street lighting.
  • Building community halls.
  • Improving education in villages.
» Herb and vegetable gardens:

We promote healthy living among self help groups. We have four herbal nurseries at:
  • Vandanallur in Kanchipuram District
  • Papanasam in Thirunelveli District
  • Pechipara in Kanyakumari District
  • Thadikarakonam in Kanyakumari District
These nurseries propagate saplings and distribute them to families. They also educate groups in herbal medicines, herbal treatment and herbal marketing.


» Sarvodhaya Nagar for Leprosy Families :

Sarvodhaya Nagar is a rehabilitation centre which provides accommodation and rehabilitation for the families of people suffering from leprosy. Each family is accommodated in a separate house. They have electricity, water, a community hall, dispensary, gardens and space to rear goats and chicken.

Occupants of these homes have registered themselves as a society. They are independent, self governing and dignified.


Rehabilitation Centre Mentally ill Womens

Mentally illness is one of the important form of mental health problem prevailing among people. Women are more vulnerable and insecure when they are hit by mental illness. The consequences of Mental illness among women need to be serve that they need to be protected and safe guarded against all such evil to them. Our province trying to start an rehabilitation centre so that it has able to share the love of God and render its noble services to women who are affected.
